Mr. Barentzen has over 16 years of experience representing individuals and both large and small businesses as plaintiffs and defendants in state courts, federal courts and administrative proceedings in a broad array of complex civil litigation matters.  A representative sample of these matters include:

Plaintiffs' Cases

  • represented regional wireless telephone company with respect to multi-million dollar claims against its former law firm, a large global firm, for overbilling and fraud;
  • represented government contractor in action against the United States government sucessfully converting a termination for cause to one for the government's convenience;
  • represented adult victim of childhood sexual assualt in action against prominent Archdiocese of the Catholic Church;
  • represented former executive of financial services company with respect whistleblower and fraud claims against her former employer;
  • represented investors in complex multi-million dollar international collection matters brought in numerous courts around the country and in Mexico seeking repayment on defaulted bonds;
  • represented individuals in Bivens action against federal government employees alleging violations of their Fourth Amendment right to be free from unreasonable searches and seizures in their home and the First Amendment right to freely exercise their religious beliefs;
  • represented individual in successful appeal in case of first impression before the Second Circuit in which individual sought to obtain discovery in aid of foreign litigation pursuant to 28 U.S.C. § 1782;
  • represented government contractor in theft of trade secrets action;
  • represented doctor with respect to whistleblower claims against VA hospital before the Merit Systems Protection Board;
  • represented broker-dealer in an appeal to Eighth Circuit in action against a public auditor alleging a violation of federal and state securities laws;
  • represented investment bank in dispute with former executive over covenant not to compete in employment agreement;
  • represented individual in employment discrimination action against the District of Columbia;
  • represented minor in suit for damages resulting from a dog attack; and
  • represented three individuals at trial in three seperate actions seeking to obtain civil protection orders against individuals stalking them.  

Defendants' Cases

  • represented government contractor in breach of contract case against subcontractor;
  • represented 22 individuals and entities, and obtained dismissals for all of them, in numerous actions consolidated as a multi-district litigation arising out of the September 11th attacks;
  • represented union executive in civil investigation against claims of embezzlement;
  • represented employment services and immigration company in civil forfeiture action resulting in the return of over $500,000 in funds seized by the government;
  • represented employment services and immigration company and its former officers and employees in civil actions alleging fraud and breach of contract;
  • represented individual directors of bank in appeal in which the Second Circuit affirmed dismissal of claims with respect to proxy statement that was allegedly materially misleading;
  • represented member of Palestinian parliament and quashed subpoena served on her in action pending in United States federal court;
  • represented individual sued by former employer for allegedly violating covenant not to compete;
  • represented daughter against claims of breach of fiduciary duty in guardianship action against her and her mother;
  • represented major accounting firm in employment discrimination action brought by terminated accountant with Tourrette’s Syndrome alleging violation of Americans with Disabilities Act;
  • represented major life insurance company in various individual and consolidated actions alleging improper and fraudulent sales practices;
  • represented insurance company in various liability insurance coverage actions;
  • represented foreign brewer in multi-million dollar dispute with its distributor over United States distribution agreement; and
  • represented debtor in Chapter 11 proceeding in U.S. Bankruptcy Court for District of Delaware with respect to environmental, insurance, tax, ERISA and various contract claims.
